64 Stunning Brown Hair with Highlights Ideas for 2024

dark brown hair with higlights

The Color Fresh Mask makes it easy, refreshing their shade with sheer pigments that correct color in just 10 minutes. Depending on the shade of highlights they’ve chosen, Golden Gloss, Caramel Glaze or Pearl Blonde will revive their hue. All they have to do is comb it through clean, damp hair, allow it to develop, then rinse thoroughly and style as usual. Over time, even the brightest highlights can start to appear brassy and dull.

Classic Blonde Highlights – A True Beauty For Light Brown Hair

The traditional blonde highlights look amazing on ashy brown hair. The lightening effect of chestnut-colored highlights is one way to brighten up your dark brown tresses. Though darker shades of brown are beautiful on their own, subtle highlights can make your strands pop out even more. With touches of icy blonde highlights in brown hair, you’ll look frosted and trendy in all the right places. When you add touches of blonde to red-brown hair, your highlights will look like sunshine painted throughout your tresses. There’s a beautiful contrast between a chocolate brown and a lighter blonde.

Coffee and Caramel Highlights

They start a bit off the roots and gracefully cascade to the sides. Behati Prinsloo's ombré transitions from her brunette roots to honey bronde and ends in a light ash blonde. Becky G's balayage adds a bronzed glow to her brunette locks. Meanwhile, the face-framing highlights also work to brighten her complexion.

Light Brown Balayage For Brunette Hair

My advice is to remember that too many highlights can create a brassy effect. So work with an experienced colorist to achieve the perfect balance. Regardless of your hair type, texture or skin tone, light brown hair with highlights is fun, flawless, and lovely. As an attractive hair color, light brown hair is versatile and works well with red, honey, caramel and blonde highlights to achieve a chic style. Effortlessly cute and low-maintenance, this warm vibe continues to be a popular look.

Can You Highlight Black Hair?

It’s the ultimate highlight option to infuse your mane with glorious gold hues while keeping your beloved dark brown shade intact. Combine stunning hues of brown with blonde highlights to craft an unparalleled dimension in your curly pixie cut. Dimensional coloring does not only elevate your perfectly textured curls, but also add an extra dash of girly charm to your look. Mandy Moore's dark brown base with tan highlights creates a highly coveted blend. If you're looking for the same weightless waves, add a spritz of Ouai Wave Spray ($28). Dark brown hair with blonde highlights and lowlights causes strands to practically illuminate.

What color highlights look good on brown hair?

They’re usually placed around the face for a brightening effect and to prevent dark locks from appearing too dull or lackluster. Softly kissed by the sun, these espresso waves swirl with flaxen shades of blonde, creating an illusion of movement and depth. The understated style captures the delicate balance between a laid-back vibe and meticulous highlighting. Add some alternating lowlights and highlights to your base color in order to create more depth and volume. An edgy, pixie cut comes alive with a bold streak of emerald peeking out amidst the soft brown. The short, textured layers provide a modern, chic look, while the green highlight adds a splash of unexpected color.

Babylights give off such a glow and will make your strands look beautiful. Brown is not the typical shade of choice as highlights for black hair, because it may not show up. It is not a bright color, but it will provide sun-kissed vibrancy and dimension in deeply saturated strands. This style is ideal for women who want a low-key hairdo that is stylish enough to transition into a variety of different settings. If your hair is really dark, it’s best to lighten your strands over a course of several appointments.

Creating "lived in" and beachy hair color, like this dark brown to ash blonde, almost bronde example. We like how her textured layers show off the highlights and add a bit more dimension. Each cherry cola ribbon helps to enhance the hair’s texture, while delivering a playful pop of colour brunette clients will love.

Rapper Latto's natural curls feature a golden blonde ombré that adds a warm, glowing effect. Chestnut hair with honey blonde ombré highlights flatters Jessica Alba's olive-toned complexion. The flipped-out ends are very '90s—or '60s—(depending on who's asking) and add a nice touch. Jennifer Lopez's cascading waves are so vibrant with ample ash blonde highlights. To get smooth, glossy locks like JLo, try Moroccanoil Smoothing Lotion ($36). Nikki Reed's cool-toned bronde balayage highlights are subtle and gorgeous all at once.

The ash-blonde ombre highlighting gives soft ribbons of blonde and dimension to the overall look. Ask your colorist for a light ash blonde ombre against your dark base if you want this color. This color idea also works well with light brown hair with highlights.

It's almost a single process color, save for the ever-so-subtle strands of light brown peeking through underneath. Dakota Johnson's caramel highlights perfectly complement her skin tone and eye color. If you want to give blonde hair a try, rooted blonde highlights are the way to go. "I like this look because it gives dark brunettes a way to be blonde without the crazy maintenance if it was a highlight to the root," Brown says. "It will still be some maintenance but it grows out nicely where you don’t have to come back as soon," she adds.

It’s also very important to choose the hues that will be in harmony with your skin tone. Bronze, copper and rich reds will make darker skin tones bloom and glow. Medium-toned skin will benefit from intense browns, coppers and toffee. Fair-skinned beauties can use blondes, platinum, ash tones and lighter caramel hues. Blonde and caramel highlights just naturally fit with brown hair to create a gorgeous flow of colors. Great for all hair types and lengths, especially thick layered long hair, these brunette highlights can transform your hairstyle.

Caramel highlights add beautiful contrast to deep brunette hair. As radiant as the sun, golden highlights add a natural uplift to brown hair. You can update your brown hair by mixing in color that’s just one or two shades lighter than your natural color for a sweet and simple highlight. We rarely see Jessica Biel sporting anything other than her lightened locks, but here, her charcoal brown hair is the star of the show.

Her defined curls have a sun-kissed beachy vibe that truly brightens up her face. The awesome red-brown and caramel hues look gorgeous on these perfectly wavy tresses. Thanks to the introduced highlights, your rich hair color will get even more sophisticated. The smooth transition of tones is a sign of a high-quality dyeing job. Sometimes brunette hair can seem boring, even when styled in gorgeous wavy locks. However, there’s a way to brighten up your hairdo and make it trendier and catchier.

While beauty trends come and go, brunette highlights are iconic and have stood the test of time. With so many highlight ideas to consider, there is a cute style for all brunettes, ranging from light to dark brown hair. If high contrast isn’t your thing, opt for chocolate brown highlights instead. The warm brown hue will add rich tones throughout your mane for envy-worthy depth. Milk chocolate brown highlights on dark chocolate brown hair is a look that’s as delicious as it sounds.

Get beautiful luscious locks with a dark brown balayage with barely-there highlights. Glistening highlights will give your dark base some much-needed dimension. Barely-there highlights will liven up your hair color and blend seamlessly. Wave your hair with a curling iron and use some light hairspray, and your hairstyle will hold all day. Remember that dyeing your hair will require you use professional products at home. On the cooler side, Jennifer Lopez opted to pair her dark brown hair with greyish-ash blonde highlights.

49 Best Brown Hair With Highlights Ideas Brunette Highlights

"A lot of brunettes say they want ashy highlights, but I think they are just scared of brassy highlights," Brown says. Dark brown hair has the power to create an air of sultriness like no other, but like most people, the itch for a change can hit you out of nowhere. That doesn’t have to mean making a beeline for the nearest bottle of bleach or going as dramatic as a pixie cut, though. Sometimes all that’s needed is a subtle adjustment to freshen up your look. Lightening your hair more than three shades requires higher volumes of peroxide, which can cause more hair damage. This also means you might not be able to dye it as light as you’d like in one application.

Light Brown Highlights on Dark Brown Hair

Sienna Miller’s locks do not just shine, they overflow with breathtaking radiance. This effect can be achieved with a mix of cream, honey and ginger hues which accentuates Sienna’s golden tan. The roots should be darkened to match the tone of your eye-brows. Brushed highlights are a relatively new way of creating charming flashes of color to add intensity to your color.

Find Your Perfect Hairstyle with Just a Selfie

Make accents in caramel, gold, natural brown, honey, toffee or chestnut tones. You will see how fantastic they will look on light brown, medium and dark hair. If you have naturally dark brown hair but want a softer look, this stylish mix of caramel and brown balayage tones is especially dazzling. Once you find the right coloring pattern, your brand new color combination can be a flattering detail for your face.

So, if you’re looking for a princess-like blend, opt for delicate pink highlights throughout your mane.

#12. Dark Brown with Cool Ash Highlights

Jamie Chung's bronzed bronde highlights frame her face and flow to the ends of her hair. Supermodel Doutzen Kroes looks absolutely sensational in this bronde shade. Her bouncy ponytail shifts from a brown to golden bronde ombré that beautifully catches the light. Brown hair can be enhanced with touches of gold, here’s a nice example of a color scheme. Using just the most subtle of color fade, hair starts out darker on top and tumbles down into golden tresses.

Classic Dark Brown Hair Colors

Ask your stylist if they have any ideas to make your color pop. Natural dark brown hair color looks amazing, but if you experiment with shades a bit and add some highlights to your style, it may look even more eye-catching! Curl your locks using a volumizing product and a curling iron or a wand.

Flattering Copper Hair Color Ideas to Illuminate Your Look

The perfect combination of warm highlights and lowlights on dark brunette locks can achieve gorgeous dimensional hair. This warm brown hair balayage will lift your dark chocolate base and gives depth to your hair. This deep brunette hair with balayage highlights is perfectly polished with soft waves. You should consider getting your dark hair with highlights if you have a lighter skin complexion.

Espresso Brown with Flaxen Blonde Highlights

If you want to make your dark brown hair look more incredible, adding some subtle highlights can help – and they don’t even need to be overly bright or colorful! As you can see with this hairstyle, sable highlights add a regal and luxurious touch without the drama. If you’re new to highlighting your tresses and want to give it a try, consider refreshing your dark brown hair with light brown highlights. This chestnut balayage is ideal for beginners thanks to its soft-looking and delicate nature. Toffee-colored tones strike a gorgeous chord when they’re added to dark brown tresses.

I recommend these highlights for brunettes with medium to dark skin tones. It seamlessly blends natural-looking highlights throughout the hair to create a sun-kissed effect. Ask for hazelnut highlights woven in the hair’s lengths rather than chunky streaks.

It also requires little to no maintenance (especially compared to other popular hair color trends—like copper or peach). While it's never been a hair color that's gone out of style, its effortless upkeep and versatility are why we think it's trendy right now. Her light brown hair with subtle blonde highlights, paired with her green eyes, is the perfect balance of Earth tones.

This short, textured bob dances with caramel balayage highlights, adding a playful twist to the classic cut. The layers and waves together create a lively yet sophisticated look. Soft cocoa brown layers are given an edge with platinum money piece highlights, offering a contemporary take on the classic long hairstyle.

Simply curl your hair with a curling iron and run your fingers through it with a smoothing balm for a polished, glamorous appearance. Some highlights are so delicate that when you see them, you think they’re natural. If you want to try highlights but are worried about how they will come out, make them subtle and place those lighter streaks sporadically. The look is really simple, but it seems effortless and optimal for a natural fashionista. While most people use them to change the overall color, they can also work as subtle accents. A few slithers of color will define curly styles and really show through with movement.

Chris Weber Mirlach from Vanilla Loft managed to achieve the perfect balance of edginess and softness with a messy bob featuring a stunning velvet rose color. Just the right touch of romance and allure to short brown hair. This fabulous brown bob has received a dose of warm-toned highlights that perfectly complement the base. This awesome balayage bob gives off serious sun-kissed vibes as if you spent countless hours soaking up rays.

Blonde highlights are a fantastic way to add depth, contrast, and warmth to dark brown hair, bringing a vibrant lift to your locks. These bronde highlights look very pretty if you have darker brown hair. The tones create a soft sun-kissed dimension that works well on long-length tresses for the summer season. You can definitely pull off these brunette balayage highlights.

To make this framing fairytale real, you should ask your colorist to put an accent to the front tresses. It can be a subtle balayage with an accentuating blonde shade, for instance. Shalene Garcia creates a seamless transition from dark brown roots to blonde balayage ombre, offering a beachy vibe. The gradient is smooth, with the lighter ends adding a fresh, dynamic twist to the hairstyle.

After the cannon ball rolls down, insert your wooden handle into the large gear, then turn the gear clockwise until it stops. Back out for now and return to the standing knight.

Zoom in on the disc here and rotate the part circles, then take out the metal disc with one groove. Go down to the puzzle below and insert the disc with one groove here. Rotate the wooden cover, then slide the metal cover to the right, so you can take the special geometric object.

Examine this in your inventory and pull it completely open to reveal a lever with an octagonal shaft. Look back at the inside of the door of the small tower. Slide the switch at the top to reveal another opening, then focus on the mechanism inside here. Close this inner compartment, then take the cogwheel on an axle. Take the scepter-like object, then move the slider behind it to the left.

Use the lens on the rotated cap on the top of the microscope, then rotate it down. Go back to the front of the siege tower and attach the ram to the wooden beam near the bottom. Rotate this clockwise until the mechanism further opens, then take the engraved metal handle. Look just to the right of the boiler to see a small bookcase against the wall.

Use your Oculi Infinitum and turn the crank to line up the images on the right. Turn the small wheel at the back of the siege tower, then use the trigger again to light another flame in the distance. Go over to the blue curtain near the new flame and pull the cord to reveal a tall wooden cabinet. Go back to the globe again and look at the left disc with the Oculi Infinitum, then enter the code TERRA.

Now look over at the top of the hourglass held by the statue on the right. Use the Oculi Infinitum while looking at this statue's other hand to see MORS written on it. Look at the base of the left statue and insert the cylinder here, then rotate its letters so the whole message is NOMEN ILLI MORS. Use the Oculi Tempus and trace the shape, then adjust the time-line until you see a glowing sketch. Rotate the discs until you recreate the drawing of the Vitruvian Man. Return to the cabinet and look at the mechanism near the top. Insert the engraved metal handle and rotate it clockwise. Rotate the disc beneath the castle and take out the small key. Insert this into the keyhole above the castle and turn it, then 2 of the spires on the front will move out to the sides. Use the Oculi Tempus while looking at the castle.

Once correct, another set of doors will open and you will proceed through. Look at the middle of the large globe and move aside the 2 halves of the cover. Pull open the halves of the outer shell of the globe to reveal a complex-looking surface with two lenses. Turn left and look at the set of shelves to find another drawing File-cutter. Back out and turn right, then focus on the top of the large globe. Spin the middle part to match the pattern with the bottom part, then spin the top part to continue the pattern.

Time Machine

You can use the Oculi Infinitum for help if you need it. Look at the top of the ivory case and insert the small key, then turn it. Take out the richly-ornamented seal from the top.

Pull the drawer open and take out the wrench with a cross head. Look at the cross directly above this drawer and attach the wrench, then rotate it anticlockwise until it comes off again. Pull open the cabinet and take the engraved geometric object. Examine this in your inventory and rotate the central part, then push in the end pieces to create an octahedron. Spin the 4 outer discs, then spin the large middle disc, and another small tower will rise up here. Look more closely at this and rotate it to see some numbers.

After the palace adjusts, look at the back of it where the light beam aims at a holder. Examine the scepter-like object in your inventory; slide the small latch up, then open the sides to reveal a lens on a long shaft. Place this in the holder, then drag the holder down, and the lens will catch the light beam. Rotate the holder to the left, and the light will be directed around the mirrors on the corners of the palace.

Insert it on the edge of the disc and drag it around to open the iris, then use the Oculi Infinitum and enter the code IGNIS. Zoom in near the top of the globe and insert the adjusted unusual key. Rotate the key and it will slide down and open up the globe. This segment will now close, and the previous one will be active. Look left and pump the handle 5 times so the gauge is completely filled.

Look at the left side of the sarcophagus more closely, and use your Oculi Infinitum. Turn the wheel to move one of the screws into position to complete the glowing circuit. Pull the lever down and repeat this, until the circuit is complete. Examine this tower and insert your brass cross in the top of it. Open the tower further and take out the brass cylinder.

Remove the goblet, and the pedestal will close, then a secret passage will appear. Release the catch to light the torch, then take it to go down the stairs. Look slightly right, and approach the wooden screen to the right of the large flame.

Examining the mailbox again, slide the small cover on the front towards the left, then insert the key into the keyhole. Turn the key, open the mailbox and take the Oculi Infinitum. After the inner mechanism rotates, insert your cogwheel on an axle into the blank space. Focus on the top of the panel that you can now see, and turn both circular latches, then pull down the next two latches.
